Celebrate the Season of Scaring!

It’s my favorite time of year and to celebrate the Season of Scaring I finally updated The Phantom Playhouse with notes and links to the various horror films, thrillers, and chill-inducing cinema I’ve written about for FilmStruck this past year. FilmStruck is TCM’s film streaming service in association with Criterion and I contribute to their Streamline blog (which replaced The Movie Morlocks) every week. If you’re looking for something to watch this month you’ll find plenty of suggestions here.

I’ve updated the Writing archives with material on director Arturo Ripstein and actress Joan Bennett located in “Actors & Directors.” In “Film: 1900-1959” I’ve added new pieces on two Boris Karloff films as well as Cat People (1942) and lesser-known films such as the psychological thriller Madonna of the Seven Moons (1945) and the silent film A Cottage on Dartmoor (1929). Unsurprisingly, most of the new updates are located in “Film: 1960-1989” where you’ll find articles on some of my longtime favorites including Rosemary’s Baby (1968), Spirits of the Dead (1968), Picnic at Hanging Rock (1975), Theatre of Blood (1973) and the Japanese folk horror film, Under the Blossoming Cherry Trees (1975).
